Hear PolicyMap Data Development Lead Eliza Wallace guest lecture for West Chester University Professor Casey Bohrman’s graduate level social work class. Dr. Wallace demonstrates how students can use COVID-19 cases and deaths data to understand trends in the spread of the disease and how to use mapped data on PolicyMap including race, chronic health conditions, and access to fresh foods to identify inequities and underlying contributing factors. Using a scenario like this one, PolicyMap helps students to easily learn how to use data to strategize intervention scenarios for populations disproportionately affected by the pandemic.
The goal of the assignment is to learn to identify populations at risk of developing severe COVID-19, choose data indicators to inform that risk (including populations with high rates of asthma and diabetes), visualize the concentrations of at-risk people who are medically underserved, and develop recommendations, using hospitals and supermarkets as essential resources based on that information.
