Creating a Bibliography: Persistent Links

What are Persistent Links?

Persistent Links are URLs that connect users directly to an article, ebook, ejournal, or library database by clicking a link embedded in a webpage. Persistent links can be useful when creating syllabi, online reading lists or bibliographies, and other research tools. Persistent links can assist instructors in complying with copyright rules when downloading an article from a library database and making it available through Canvas. Linking to these articles also provides the University Libraries with more consistent usage statistics for our databases.

When adding these links to your web pages, you will want to be sure they work for off-campus students by being sure that our Proxy Server Prefix is on each URL. Some databases add the Proxy Server Prefix, others require that you add it yourself.

Our Proxy Server Prefix is https://dbproxy.lasalle.edu:443/login?url=  It will route the user through the library's website to be sure that the patron is authenticated when using electronic resources off-campus.  However it is not just a matter of adding the Proxy Server Prefix to whatever URL appears in the address bar.  Sometimes this URL is not persistent and will expire, leaving the patron with a dead link.

Each vendor handles persistent links differently.  Some allow you to simply add the Proxy Server Prefix to the URL in the address bar, while others will create an different URL for you.

Be careful with using DOIs as links. They will work on campus, but not off-campus as off-campus patrons are not in our IP range.

Each of the vendors from whom we get electronic resources can be found on the tabs on this LibGuide.  If you have any questions, please contact the Electronic Resources Librarian:  215 951 1449.

Summon

Searches in Summon ARE persistent.  Therefore if you want to send a search to someone, all you need to do is copy and paste the URL from the Address Bar.  No Proxy Server Prefix needs to be added as authentication in Summon takes place only when an item is clicked.
